USB port for mobile phones is here, and it costs $60.5 million

A $60 million (£48 million) USB port on the mobile phone market is now available.

“The new Qualcomm USB port is a premium, low-cost alternative to traditional USB charging solutions,” said Qualcomm.

“Our Qualcomm USB 3.0 port delivers more than 30 times faster performance and offers more freedom to change the way you use your mobile device.”

The USB port can also be used to charge up to 2 smartphones, as long as one has a USB-C connector, or two smartphones with USB-A connectors.

“With Qualcomm’s innovative USB 3 technology, you can plug and play your smartphone with a USB 3 port and connect it directly to the PC or Mac, and charge your devices as well,” said Samsung.

“We know USB is the next big thing for mobile devices, so this is the first major OEM device that supports this technology.”

A number of devices are currently available on the smartphone market that support USB charging, including the Xiaomi Mi Mix 2, the Google Nexus 6P, and the Samsung Galaxy S7.
